All I can say is "wow." I am just in awe with what God has already done for our team on this trip. To start, all of our travels went as smoothly as they possibly could-- no delays, no missed baggage, high spirits all around. Getting into El Salvador was an adventure, especially with only one of us knowing more than about 10 words in Spanish :)... but we met up with Enrique, our host with Young Life Expeditions, and into our hotel safely.
We spent the evening with part of the Young Life team in Apopa, San Salvador, where we will actually be attending church tomorrow morning. They made an amazing meal for us, and we played numerous games with each other that had everyone laughing hysterically. We got a chance to interact with the teenagers volunteering on the team, one of them being Lucas, Enrique's 19 y.o son who spoke fluent English and helped us translate with everyone else :) After dinner we got into an impromptu game of passing a soccer ball and trying to keep it off the ground. After about 20 minutes of this, Lucas pointed to the streets... it was no question. We all had the same mindset as him, and 5 minutes later were playing a full-fledged game of futbol in the streets, El Salvadorians and Americans. It was the best way to finish out our time for the evening with the group.
We finished the night with worship back at the hotel, heard a piece of Enrique's story, and talked about what the week will look like. I shared from Matthew 7:7, "ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened for you.." The challenge for us this week, as we come into the lent season, is for our eyes to be opened to what Jesus is inviting us into, as we participate in what is happening here in San Salvador and witness the total joy in these locals' hearts as we did today.
God is good. He is covering us this week. I have already started to see our team being touched by this experience. So rightly so.... "wow."
